Fostering Durable Skills Development: Leveraging Student Worker Programs

The past half century has witnessed exponential increases in the cost of a college degree paralleled by an increase undergraduate students who are employed during matriculation. While impact on learning outcomes due to off-campus employment continues receive much attention, there been little attention paid on-campus through student worker programs and their benefits, especially developing durable skills improving retention. Research demonstrated that engagement oncampus activities improves retention persistence students. Additionally, employers desire power or (formerly known as “soft skills”), suited meet this demand. This study proposes investigate way across institutions support development skills, how these can be leveraged improve completion rates undergraduates, those differ program. Results indicate library services represent model for other functional areas adopt workers order graduation rates, along with employable skills.
